In 2000, the roughly 1600m² large subway below the crossroads of Altstadtring and Maximilianstraße (from 1973 to 1995 operated as ‘Kunstforum’ by Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus) has been converted into a variable exhibition space and renamed to Maximiliansforum. From October 2004 to June 2009, ZKMax used the place to present a continuous, high quality programme focussed on media art. ZKMax’s concept - exemplary for a sheltered but nevertheless public space dedicated to media art – is being sustained at MaximiliansForum. The location in one of Munich’s traditional arts areas surrounded by commercial and non-commercial galleries, theatres and museums, as well as in Munich’s most elegant shopping district, offers a unique starting point.
